HKICS Survival Guide: From Super Early-Bird Application to Your First Pop-Up Success
Share
Participating in a creative show is more than just a sales opportunity; it’s a deep dive into building your brand and connecting with customers face-to-face. I had the privilege of exhibiting at the Hong Kong Illustration and Creative Show (HKICS). Many have asked how a newcomer like me prepared and successfully brought the "Dreamy Apple Green Cake Shop" booth theme to life. Here is a summary of my practical experience, hoping to provide inspiration for those planning their own HKICS exhibition strategy.
1. HKICS Application Tips: Speed and Precision are Key
The first step of exhibiting begins months in advance. Many beginners overlook the critical details of the application phase.
- Target the "Super Early Bird" phase: I started monitoring the information as early as last December. This not only increases the chances of being selected but also provides early-bird discounts, significantly reducing operational costs. Regardless of your booth size, prioritizing this is my top piece of HKICS application advice, especially for international creators planning to travel from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, or Thailand.
2. Space Planning: Don't Waste Those Walls
Once your spot is confirmed, it's time to plan the booth. Facing the space provided by the show organizers, my mindset was: "It would be a pity to waste these three walls."
- Theme Planning: I wanted the booth to feel like a pop-up cake shop. While I initially considered using Cherry Blosssom’s signature green, I eventually settled on "Apple Green." This tone is gentle yet recognizable, creating a beautiful chemical reaction between the products and the booth decor, effectively attracting passersby.
- Maximize Vertical Space: To avoid a cluttered feel, I added wall-mounted display racks, a brand story board, and a half-length mirror on the sidewalls. This HKICS booth design strategy not only maximized display area but also created an open visual experience, making it more comfortable for customers to browse.
3. Gratitude: Staying True to the Roots
These few days weren't just about sales numbers—they were about the warmth between people.
- The Power of Teamwork: I am deeply grateful to every family member and friend who came to help. Without you, I could not have managed such an intense exhibition alone.
- Fans' Love: It was heartening to see so many returning customers. Thank you for your unwavering support; even as I move between different pop-up locations, you never forgot me. This connection is the core of the Cherry Blosssom brand story and my greatest motivation to keep creating.
- Creator Community: This event connected me with old friends and new artists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and Korea. Exchanging ideas with such passionate and talented creators was incredibly rewarding.
Conclusion
From a newcomer to a successful exhibitor, this experience has confirmed that with good planning and a heart for your brand, every exhibition becomes a crucial piece of your dream. I look forward to seeing everyone again at the next Hong Kong Illustration and Creative Show!
